Growing at UJ: It is more than just a diploma

 UJ@20: HONOURING A TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND MILESTONES

For the University of Johannesburg, this year marks as a milestone and an iconic feature since its establishment in 2005- 20 years of academic excellence, innovation and community engagement. My name is Nosihle Kate Mngomezulu a proud UJ student doing my second in the course of Public relations and communication. Today I find myself reflecting on what UJ@20 represents, it fills me with gratitude and inspiration, for me personally the university of Johannesburg has been more than just a place to earn a certain qualification- it has groomed and natured my curiosity and encouragement to intellectual exploration. This is my story and journey at the university ever since I started in the year 2024.

SHAPING PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC GROWTH.

UJ's impact on my personal development has been just as significant as its academic influence in the past years. the university's diverse student body and inclusive culture have broadened my worldview and deepened my appreciation for different perspectives. getting to engage with other peers and students from various backgrounds has enriched my university experience from my first until now and going forth, fostering empathy, collaboration and a strong sense of community.

Moreover, UJ's support systems- ranging from mentorship programmes to support organisations- have empowered me to develop leadership skills and confidence. whether participating in student governments, volunteering in community projects (community engagement) or joining academic clubs I have found countless opportunities, knowledge and experience to grow as a well-rounded individual. these experiences have not only enhanced my university life but have also prepared me for challenges and opportunities beyond campus and the outside world.

TAKING PART OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN SCHOOLS AROUND UJ

The University of Johannesburg's most inspiring aspect is its determination towards social development towards social development and community engagement. UJ@20 is not only the celebration of academic achievements, degrees and diplomas but it also celebrates its role as an inspiration and impulse for positive change in society. UJ actively contributes to addressing social inequalities, encouraging social development and empowering disadvantaged communities through the various outreach programs, partnerships and research programs.

As a student at the university, I have seen firsthand how UJ motivates us to be socially responsible and educated citizens. the university's focus on community service and social justice has developed in me, a deep sense of responsibility and purpose. to be part of an institution like UJ that values and takes responsibility for not only academic success but also the well-being and development of the surrounding communities is very empowering.

LOOKING AHEAD: HOPES FOR UJ'S FUTURE

As we celebrate 20 years of academic excellence, I have very high hopes for the future of the University of Johannesburg, filled with enthusiasm and positivity. I envision and see UJ proceeding to expand and grow its role as a leader in higher education in South Africa and globally(internationally). I believe that UJ will keep pushing boundaries and setting new standards of academic excellence and milestones.

I also hope that the institution continues to maintain, uphold and deepen its devotion to inclusivity and social justice, ensuring that education remains accessible to everyone regardless of their culture or background. UJ's role in shaping the future of students, leaders in the making and innovators has never been crucial and more important.
